Biography of Desire explains the history of a wounded person, where pain comes from, how it manifests, how it translates to anguish. I enjoyed how deeply emotional and obviously personal this book of poetry was, and I found it very brave for the focus to be on sexual abuse. Some of the poetry flowed beautifully and really spoke to me. However, I did struggle a great deal with the fact that this book was clearly written by someone that did not use English as their first language. Because of this some of the poems were hard to follow and I found myself rereading them several times and losing the flow of the book. I would still give this book three stars out of five and think that it is definitely worth reading.Product details

It made me rethink about sexual abuse. I still cannot believe that the fact. it was extremely shocking. The author is very honest. Sensitive poetry, but highly recommended.
"Biography of Desire" is a book of poems that you read through so quickly, it feels like you only got started when the book has already ended. That may be due to the fact that the collection is accompanied by a number of paratexts that stress the background from which the main text itself has grown out. The reader expects a long journey but it has been crammed into a mere twelve poems. They do convey a sense of deep turmoil but unfortunately, it seems that the story of the poet is more powerful than his creation. And I have to ask is all this background information really necessary?
One of the first things that I noticed while reading "Biography of Desire" is that the author is clearly not a native English speaker. At first this puzzled me but then I realized that this type of "broken English" is a way to express the poetic I who has a "broken voice" as it says on the backcover. It is a brilliant touch to make the suffering of the "I" very clear and present in the text.
The poetic I has several enemies and it is not quite clear towards whom the anger and repulsion are directed. The mother, the father, the mysterious "you"? Is there only one "you" or is it a construction to address everyone who has hurt the "I"? The words of the enemies are innocent and protective "Be aware of strangers!" ("Ran's Son") or "Everything is OK. / God loves you." ("Behind the Closed Door") Their actions are harmful, leaving the "I" to deal with the aftermath, including this collection of poems that expresses all the confusion, pain and hope linked to the awful experience that set everything in motion "The painting of someone I love / is framed in pain." ("Po") The difficulty that the "I" has to deal with is loving and hating simultaneously because the enemy is a loved one who has taken advantage of that love. It is quite remarkable that the love doesn't disappear, it stays in the text as a type of hope, something to cling to, to help the "I" get over the hate.
The poems are indeed very emotional as they should be. Their fragmentary nature and often irrational jumps are perfect for a reader who is willing to switch off their analytical side and simply let feelings carry them through the text which I consider to be the best way to read this book. "The horizon cannot be completed / Without my feelings." ("Self-Portrait") A roller coaster of moods is guaranteed and despite the short volume, you feel rather exhausted after finishing the book, as if you've just seen a long Greek play.
It is, without a doubt, great courage that made Adria Guinart publish "Biography of Desire" and he should be applauded for drawing attention to the subject of sexual violence which is a horrific thing that nobody should ever go through. That's why we need to celebrate the people who have survived and come out stronger, but making discounts on strong content and form will not help their cause. The main flaw of the poetry book is that it doesn't really work without the supporting paratexts. The talent of the author is obvious and I encourage him to write new texts that are free from the chains of the past and speak for themselves.

Biography of Desire by Adrià Guinart is a genuine voice against sexual assault of all types. What makes the anthology stands out dozens of books with the same concern is the author has not adopted a biased approach by raising voice of female sexual assault but sexual assault of all types, even against the male gender. Biography of Desire is a concoction of experience of sexual assault of the victim himself who happens to be its author. The protagonist in the sleek yet powerful and discerning anthology yells pain suffered at the hand of such a person he should have had no reason to fear from.
The protagonist digs a broken heart who suffered sexual assault at the very hand of his own brother. He stumbles at every corner in the journey of dark life where sexual assault knows no bound, "The crowd, prostituted and slaved," and even God is dumb in a lost paradise, with no hope of respite. He cautions everyone "Be aware of strangers!" to be safe but soon his belief turns white compelling him to say "Be aware of the known ones!" when he becomes a victim at the hand of his own blood.
The shadows of evil deeds linger in the mind of the victim as he suffered the bad stuff at a very young age. He resorted to his parents to seek compassion but got no healing except the consolatory words. This left him in `no-where' world. The evil memories of torture and treachery are written across the horizon of cold sky without a hope of showers as the sky has gone dry. The protagonist sees his own relation as a `chemical hail'. As he grows, his pain stiffens with time, the victim recalls the pain on his body--his breathes are hard, skin bruised--which makes him writhe all his life.
But life is not that cruel, his `temporary hell' is over and the `cloud of depression' disperses. There is a silver line of hope; he yearns for love from his parents. The first hand experience seconds the fact that the accused in sexual assault is generally those who have close proximity to the victims. This angle demands ears.
